Retaining Wall Build for an Egress Window That Actually Works

Egress window projects are more than just cutting an opening in a foundation wall. Once that window goes in, you've got exposed soil, grade changes, and water management to deal with - all right up against your house. That's where the outside work matters just as much as what happens inside.

Here's what we were working with - a freshly installed pair of Pella egress windows on a home, with the surrounding soil disturbed and ungraded from the excavation. The yard needed to be properly shaped and cleared so water moves away from the foundation, not toward it. That kind of grading work is easy to overlook, but skipping it is how you end up with a wet basement six months later.

The retaining walls we built around each window well do a few things at once. They hold back the surrounding soil so it doesn't slump into the window area over time. They also create a clean boundary between the gravel drainage bed and the yard, keeping everything in its place. The curved block design gives it a finished, intentional look - not like an afterthought bolted onto the side of a house.

The drainage bed itself is filled with gravel right up to the window sill, which is exactly what you want. Gravel drains fast and doesn't hold moisture against the foundation or the window frame. Paired with the retaining wall, it keeps that whole area functional and low-maintenance. The surrounding dirt work was then graded back to blend with the yard and prep it for sod.
